Blepharitis

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a common, chronic condition that involves inflammation of the eyelid margins (the edges of the eyelids where the eyelashes grow).

🔍 Causes of Blepharitis:

  • Bacterial infection (especially Staphylococcus)

  • Seborrheic dermatitis (a type of dandruff)

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction (oil glands in eyelids blocked)

  • Allergic reactions

  • Rosacea

  • Lice or mites on eyelashes (rare)

⚠️ Symptoms:

  • Red, swollen eyelids

  • Itchy or burning eyes

  • Crusts or flakes at the base of the eyelashes

  • Gritty or foreign body sensation

  • Watery or dry eyes

  • Eyelashes falling out or growing abnormally

  • Blurred vision (in severe cases)

🩺 Diagnosis:

Based on clinical examination of the eyelids and eyelashes

  • Slit-lamp exam may be used to assess inflammation and gland function

💊 Treatment:

Lid hygiene: Regular cleaning of eyelids using warm compresses and gentle scrubbing

Antibiotics: Topical (e.g., erythromycin or bacitracin) or oral (e.g., doxycycline) in bacterial cases

Steroid eye drops or ointments (short-term use only)

Artificial tears for dryness

Omega-3 supplements for meibomian gland support

✅ Prevention & Management:

  • Daily eyelid cleaning

  • Avoid using eye makeup during flare-ups

  • Manage underlying skin conditions (e.g., rosacea, dandruff)

  • Avoid touching or rubbing the eyes
