Ectropion is an eye condition in which the lower eyelid turns outward, away from the eyeball. This causes the inner surface of the eyelid to be exposed and prone to irritation.

Types of Ectropion:


1. Involutional (Senile) Ectropion:

Most common type.

  • Caused by facial nerve (CN VII) palsy.     Leads to muscle weakness of the eyelids.

3. Cicatricial Ectropion:eda1

  • Due to scarring or contracture of the skin near the eyelid (e.g., burns, trauma, surgery).

4. Mechanical Ectropion:

  • Caused by tumors or masses pulling the eyelid away from the eye.

5. Congenital Ectropion:

  • Rare.

  • Present at birth, usually associated with genetic disorders like Down syndrome.


Symptoms:

  • Tearing (epiphora)

  • Eye irritation or redness

  • Dryness or gritty sensation

  • Sensitivity to light and wind

  • Chronic conjunctivitis


Complications:

  • Corneal exposure

  • Infections

  • Vision problems if left untreated


Treatment:

Lubricating eye drops or ointments – for temporary relief


Taping the eyelid – in some mild or temporary cases


Surgical correction – main treatment, especially for severe or persistent cases
