How to insert contact lenses for beginners

Insertion of Contact Lenses

Before You Start

  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

  • Work over a clean, well-lit surface.

  • Make sure your lenses are clean, undamaged, and the correct side out.

Step-by-Step Insertion

  1. Check Lens Orientation

    • Place the lens on the tip of your index finger.

    • Look at its shape:

      • Correct: Looks like a smooth bowl.

      • Inside-out: Edges flare out slightly like a saucer.

  2. Hold Upper Eyelid

    • With your non-dominant hand, hold your upper eyelid firmly to prevent blinking.

  3. Pull Down Lower Eyelid

    • Use the middle finger of your dominant hand (the same hand holding the lens) to gently pull down your lower eyelid.

  4. Insert the Lens

    • Look straight ahead or slightly upward.

    • Gently place the lens directly on your cornea (center of the colored part of your eye).

  5. Release Eyelids & Blink Slowly

    • Let go of your eyelids and blink slowly to center the lens.

    • If blurry, gently massage your eyelid or remove and rinse the lens before reinserting.

  6. Repeat for the Other Eye

Tips for Success

  • Always start with the same eye first to avoid mixing lenses.

  • If your eyes feel dry, use sterile contact lens rewetting drops.

  • If discomfort persists, remove and inspect the lens for debris or damage.

Removing Contact Lenses:

Prepare Your Hands & Area

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with mild soap.

  • Dry with a lint-free towel (water droplets can carry germs).

  • Stand over a clean, well-lit surface — ideally with a mirror.

Keep Your Eye Moist

  • Blink a few times to moisten the lens.

  • If your eyes feel dry, apply a sterile rewetting drop first.

Gently Hold Your Eye Open

  • With your non-dominant hand, hold your upper eyelid open to prevent blinking.

  • With your dominant hand, pull down the lower eyelid using your middle finger.

Slide & Pinch Method

  • Look slightly upward.

  • Using your index finger, touch the lower edge of the lens and slide it down onto the white part of your eye (the sclera).

  • Pinch the lens gently between your thumb and index finger to remove it.
(Do not pinch directly on your cornea — always slide first.)

Store or Dispose

  • If reusable: Place the lens in a clean case with fresh solution.

  • If daily disposable: Discard immediately.

  • Never reuse daily disposables.

Extra Safety Tips

  • Remove lenses in the same order every time (e.g., right eye first) to avoid mix-ups.

  • Avoid using sharp nails — keep them trimmed.

  • If the lens won’t come off easily, apply rewetting drops, wait a minute, and try again.

  • Never force a stuck lens off your eye
