Pinguecula

Pinguecula

Pinguecula is a common, benign (non-cancerous) growth on the conjunctiva — the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye (sclera).

Key points:

Appearance:

Yellowish, slightly raised bump, usually on the side of the sclera near the nose, but can also appear on the outer side.

Cause:

  • Long-term exposure to sunlight (UV light)
  • wind
  • dust
  • more common in people who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Symptoms:

  • May cause mild irritation, dryness, or redness

  • Usually painless and does not affect vision

Treatment:

  • Often not required unless it causes discomfort

  • Lubricating eye drops can relieve irritation

  • Sunglasses help prevent progression

  • Rarely, surgery is done if it grows large or causes cosmetic concern

Difference from Pterygium:

Pinguecula stays confined to the conjunctiva, while a pterygium can grow onto the cornea.
