Pterygium
Pterygium
Pterygium is a non-cancerous, triangular-shaped growth of conjunctival tissue that extends from the white part of the eye (conjunctiva) onto the cornea.
Causes / Risk Factors
- UV light exposure (common in people living in sunny climates)
- Chronic irritation from dust, wind, smoke
- Dry eye conditions
- More common in people working outdoors
Symptoms
- Visible fleshy growth on the eye (usually nasal side)
- Redness
- Irritation, burning, or foreign body sensation
- Blurred vision (if it grows over the cornea toward the pupil)
- Cosmetic concerns
Complications
- Astigmatism due to corneal distortion
- Obstruction of the visual axis (advanced cases)
Treatment
Mild cases:
- Lubricating eye drops
- Sunglasses for UV protection
- Avoiding irritants
Surgical removal:
- Indicated if growth affects vision, causes significant discomfort, or for cosmetic reasons
- Recurrence is possible; use of conjunctival autograft reduces recurrence rates
