Types of Entropion

Types of Entropion:

Entropion (sometimes misspelled as "entropia") is a condition in which the eyelid — usually the lower lid — turns inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the eye surface. This can lead to irritation, pain, and damage to the cornea.

1. Involutional (Senile) Entropion

Cause: Age-related weakening of eyelid muscles and tissues.

Common in: Elderly people.

Features: Laxity of the eyelid, horizontal eyelid laxity, and overriding of preseptal orbicularis over pretarsal portion.

2. Congenital Entropion

Cause: Developmental defect present at birth.

Common in: Infants.

Features: Usually involves the lower eyelid. May resolve on its own or require surgery.

3. Cicatricial Entropion

Cause: Scarring of the conjunctiva or inner eyelid.

Examples: Trachoma, chemical burns, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Features: Scar pulls the eyelid inward.

4. Spastic Entropion

Cause: Blepharospasm (excessive eyelid muscle contraction) often due to irritation or inflammation.

Common in: Any age group.

Features: Temporary and may resolve if the underlying cause is treated.

5. Mechanical Entropion

Cause: Tumors or heavy lid causing inward turning.

Features: Less common. Due to mass effect or traction.
