Diseases of the Choroid

 Diseases of the Choroid

The choroid is the vascular layer of the eye between the retina and the sclera. It supplies oxygen and nutrients to the outer retina. Diseases affecting the choroid are called choroidopathies or choroidal diseases.

🔹 Common Choroidal Diseases:

1. Choroiditis

  • Inflammation of the choroid.

  • Can be caused by infections (e.g., tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis) or autoimmune conditions.

Symptoms: Blurred vision, floaters, eye pain (sometimes).

2. Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV)

  • Abnormal blood vessels grow from the choroid into the retina.

  • Common in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Symptoms: Distorted vision, central vision loss.

3. Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR)

  • Fluid leaks from choroid under the retina, forming a blister-like elevation.

Symptoms: Blurred central vision, dark spots, image distortion.

4. Choroidal Melanoma

  • A rare cancer of the eye arising from the choroid’s melanocytes.

  • May not cause early symptoms, but can lead to vision loss or eye bulging.

5. Choroidal Detachment

  • Separation of the choroid from the sclera due to fluid or blood accumulation.

Causes: Trauma, surgery, inflammation.

6. Choroidal Hemangioma

Benign vascular tumor in the choroid.

May cause blurred vision if it affects the retina.

🔍 Symptoms

  • Sudden vision loss

  • Distorted or blurred vision
  •  Floaters or flashes

  • Dark spots in the visual field

Diagnosis:

  • Fundus examination

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

  • Fluorescein angiography

  • Ultrasonography (in tumors or detachments)

💊 Treatment:

  1. Depends on the cause

  • Infections: Antibiotics or antivirals

  • Inflammation: Steroids or immunosuppressants

CNV: Anti-VEGF injections

Tumors: Laser, radiation, or surgery
