Watering of eye
Watering of the Eye (also known as epiphora) is a condition where there is excessive tearing or overflow of tears onto the face. It may affect one or both eyes and can occur at any age.
👁️ Causes of Watering Eyes:
1. Overproduction of Tears:
- Eye irritation (dust, smoke, wind)
- Allergies
- Eye infections (conjunctivitis)
- Dry eyes (paradoxically causes more tears)
- Foreign body in the eye
2. Poor Tear Drainage:
- Blocked tear ducts (nasolacrimal duct obstruction)
- Age-related changes (narrowing of tear ducts)
- Eyelid problems (ectropion or entropion)
- Injury or inflammation of the tear drainage system
3. Medical Conditions:
- Bell’s palsy (facial nerve weakness)
- Sinus infections
- Tumors pressing on the tear duct area (rare)
🔍 Symptoms:
- Constant tearing
- Blurred vision due to watery eyes
- Eye redness or irritation
- Swelling near the inner corner of the eye (in case of infection or blockage)
🩺 Diagnosis:
- Eye examination by ophthalmologist
- Fluorescein dye test (to check tear drainage)
- Dacryocystography or CT scan (in chronic cases)
💊 Treatment Options:
1. For Overproduction:
- Treat underlying irritation or allergies
- Lubricating eye drops (for dry eyes)
- Avoid triggers (like wind, smoke)
2. For Drainage Issues:
- Warm compresses and massage
- Antibiotics (if infection is present)
- Probing (for infants)
Surgical procedures:
- Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) – creates new tear drainage pathway
- Punctal dilation or stenting
👶 Special Note for Babies:
Many newborns have tear duct blockages that resolve by 1 year of age. Regular massage often helps.
