stye (also called hordeolum)

 stye (also called hordeolum)

A stye (also called hordeolum) is a painful red bump that appears on the edge or inside of the eyelid. It looks like a pimple and is caused by a bacterial infection in the oil glands of the eyelid.

๐Ÿ” Causes of Stye:

  • Bacterial infection (usually Staphylococcus)

  • Blocked oil glands (Meibomian glands)

  • Poor eyelid hygiene

  • Rubbing eyes with dirty hands

  • Use of old or contaminated makeup

๐Ÿ‘️ Symptoms:

  • Red, painful swelling on eyelid

  • Tenderness

  • A small yellow spot (may form pus)

  • Watering of the eye

  • Light sensitivity

  • Feeling like something is in the eye

๐ŸงŠ Treatment:

  • Warm Compress: Apply a warm, clean cloth to the eyelid for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a day

  • Helps drain the pus and reduce pain

Do Not Pop the Stye:

  • Let it drain on its own

Keep Eyelid Clean:

  • Wash gently with baby shampoo and water

Avoid Eye Makeup & Lenses:

  • Until the stye is healed

Antibiotic Ointment/Eye Drops:

  • Only if it becomes severe or spreads (prescribed by doctor)

Pain Relievers:

  • Like paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed

⚠️ When to See a Doctor:

  • If it doesn’t improve in 1 week
  • Becomes very painful or affects vision

  • Repeats frequently

  • Spreads to other parts of the eyelid or face
