Uveal Tract
🧠 Uveal Tract
The uveal tract is the middle pigmented and vascular layer of the eye, located between the sclera (outer layer) and the retina (inner layer).
🔍 Parts of the Uveal Tract:
1. Iris
- The colored part of the eye
- Controls pupil size and thus regulates the amount of light entering the eye
2. Ciliary Body
- Located behind the iris
Functions:
- Aqueous humor production (fluid in the front of the eye)
- Accommodation (changes lens shape for near vision via ciliary muscle)
3. Choroid
- Vascular layer between the sclera and retina
- Supplies oxygen and nutrients to the outer retina
🧬 Functions of the Uveal Tract:
- Provides nutrition to the eye (especially the retina)
- Produces aqueous humor
- Controls light entry via pupil constriction/dilation
- Helps with focus (accommodation)
- Plays a role in immune response within the eye
⚠️ Clinical Importance:
Diseases of the uveal tract are collectively called uveitis
- Tumors can occur in any part of the uveal tract (e.g., choroidal melanoma)
